🌐 GENERAL CLASS
HF privileges unlocked! The world is literally your antenna.
🏆 AMATEUR EXTRA CLASS
The final boss. Mount Everest of ham radio.
THE BIRTH OF AMATEUR RADIO
Marconi sent the first transatlantic radio signal in 1901. The 1912 Radio Act banished hams to "useless" short wavelengths -- accidentally handing them the most powerful spectrum on Earth!
1912 -- Regulation Era
After the Titanic disaster, the Radio Act of 1912 was passed. Amateurs were banished to short waves below 200 meters. Those frequencies turned out to bounce around the world!
1921 -- First Transatlantic QSO
Hiram Percy Maxim organized the first verified transatlantic ham contact. His callsign W1AW is still on the air as the ARRL station!
WWII -- Hams to the Rescue
Amateur radio shut down for civilians during WWII. Thousands of hams enlisted as cryptographers, radio operators, and engineers.
1961 -- OSCAR-1
Amateur operators launched OSCAR 1! It transmitted "HI HI" in Morse. Today AMSAT operates dozens of amateur satellites.
1990s -- Digital Revolution
Hams invented packet radio -- an early form of packet-switched networking. Wi-Fi protocols owe debts to ham radio experimenters.
Today -- SDR Era
Software Defined Radio lets a $25 USB dongle receive weather satellites and air traffic control. The hobby is more accessible than ever!
